Katie Cook’s Gronk

Last night, Gracie and I drew for the unbelievably nice and insanely talented Katie Cook. Katie was an “early adopter” of 5 Minute Marvels, drawing this Wonder Woman for Gracie in 2010. Katie’s worked for Star Wars online and countless others on top of creating her own Webcomic, Gronk, about a nice, nerdy lady who adopts an inquisitive green monster. I put Grace’s drawing in both large form and combined with mine.

First Drawing of the Year: Shadowcat!

So, we’re starting the year by delivering on a debt. Weeks ago, I promised a young lady in Greensboro that Grace and I would draw Kitty Pryde. So, Carly, here you go. I wanted to draw the classic blur Shadowcat costume and Grace was enchanted by Katie Cook’s drawing of Shadowcat as cat here.

And, to prove that we’re about sketching and having fun and not perfectionism, check this out. Umm … unless Kitty’s mutant power is having her thumbs on the opposite side of her hand, I kinda’ messed that up. 🙂

Experimenting with Color

At C2E2 earlier this year, we met artist Katie Cook and bought the charming Thing/Human Torch card here. It’s been up on the bulletin board next to the drafting table Grace and I share and she drew inspiration from it last week.

We’ve been trying to learn about different drafting styles/techniques lately, and this was a good example. Grace laid down the color shape first and then went back and added the detail, just as Katie did here. Grace was very proud of this work. Sorry the Torch’s dialogue baloon cuts off. That’s the edge of the paper. 🙂 Happy New Year!

Draw Katie Cook’s Gronk Contest – Winner Molly Wasielewski (10)

I am sorry it took so long to get these up, but am thrilled to present the sketches we received from artists of all ages. Clearly, Katie Cook’s new character, Gronk — a big hearted monster, inspired lots of fun and love in our artists.

It was a hard call, but Katie and the 5MM team are happy to announce 10-year-old, Mollu Wasielewski the winner of our first contest. We hope to see more from her!

And, until then, drop by www.KatieCanDraw.com to enjoy Katie’s work and, of course, Gronk!

Contest Extension: Draw Katie Cook’s Gronk!

I am having so much fun seeing the art coming in, I am extending the contest to draw Katie Cook’s Gronk! All art must be in by midnight this Sunday, June 6 to compete. So, get those kids drawing!

Here are the details:

Our good 5MM buddy, Katie Cook, has just launched Gronk! — a weekly Web comic about a little monster who doesn’t really want to be a monster “because she’s just so darn cute.” Check it out here: http://www.gronkcomic.com/ The winner of the contest will get a digital 5 Minute Marvel drawn by Katie! And, people, that be cool indeed. So, get drawing!

Now, the idea is for KIDS to send in their artwork, but we’ll take submissions from adults and teens.

Wonder Woman! by Katie Cook

This morning started by opening an e-mail to find a gorgeous drawing of Wonder Woman by the mega talented illustrator, Katie Cook! What a perfect way to start the day! Please do yourself a favor … click on the image to see it nice and large and take a look at how Katie built this image.

The girls and I met Katie at C2E2 this Sunday, and she could not have been nicer. I have to say, as a father, when someone takes time to not only talk to and be nice to your kids and then draws with them … well, that person is aces in your book. Great things are happening for Katie right now. And, I have a feeling it’s just the tip of the iceberg. Check out her work and her Web site: http://www.KatieCanDraw.com THANKS, KATIE!

The girls recently drew Wonder Woman, so we opted to do Wonder Girl. Cate and Grace had fun. I learned the painful lesson of 5 minutes. I loved my drawing until I was done and saw that poor Donna Troy seems to have been hit by the Ultra-Humanity’s brain bulging beam. Her forehead is HUGE! But, five minutes is five minutes. I had to leave it alone and post it. 🙂
