Ed Emberley’s Justice League of America!

I had so much fun drawing my rendition of the Avengers a la Ed Emberley’s style, that I had to give it a go with their DC Comics counterparts — the Justice League of America.

To learn more about Ed Emberley’s work, here’s link to his site, which has lots of fun activities.

Wonder Woman!

Grace and I got a nice surprise today when artist and animator, Alisa Harris, agreed to draw with us this morning … and then had the art in about an hour later. Wow! Talk about a Wonder Woman! Grace had a lot of fun drawing the Princess of Power. I chose to use a Mike Sekowsky image from an old, old issue of Justice League of America for inspiration.

Alisa, we had a lot of fun with you today. Thanks for your incredible support. And, ya’ll, check out Alisa’s extremely varied and impressive body of work on her blog www.AlisaHarris.com

UPDATED! A word from Alisa Harris:

Hawkgirl & Hawkman

Grace and I did these a while back. Grace’s main concern on these was experimenting with flesh tones … which she learned are very tricky. Been to the tanning bed recently Katar?

On a personal note, I really do love the design of Hawkgirl’s costume. Like, a lot.

Holy Cow! Cate is Back!

Don’t fall out of your chair or anything, but while Grace was away at Girl Scouts, Cate wanted to bust of the DC Encyclopedia and draw. She chose Black Canary and set to work. “This is the best I can do!” she exclaimed with a sonic scream of her own. I love the pigtails on Dinah.

The Crime Syndicate! by Grace (7) & Dad

I know that DC’s Earth-2 by Frank Quitely and Grant Morrison made The Crime Syndicate of Amerika ultra-cool. But, me, I love the goofy, silly and innocent first appearance of the Syndicate back when Gardner Fox and Mike Sekowsky were calling the shots at the Justice League of America. To me, Sekowsky’s style was so inviting, so fun, so comic-booky … so Grace and I went there.

And, I’m proud to say, we polished off the whole Syndicate in just 10 minutes.

P.S. I ABSOLUTELY ADORE Grace’s “big head baby” version of Power Ring.

P.P.S.S. Cate promised to draw tonight … but, yeah, she’s still on strike. Grace says she’s “retired.” At five.

Metamorpho! by Grace (6) & Dad

When I was young, my dad brought me a giant box of old comics my uncles and he had collected. There was lots of goodness in there. And, it fired my imagination. One of my favorites from the box, was the colorful Metamorpho, the Element Man. I’ve been dying to draw this one. You can read about him here: http://dc.wikia.com/wiki/Rex_Mason_(New_Earth)

Proud father moment #5,367. Grace drew and colored her picture and then excalaimed, “I forgot to ink it!” She promptly went back and added thick black lines. They obscure some of the delicate work she did on this, but the fact that we have progressed to her understanding that comics start with pencils and proceed to inks and colors … well, she’s getting serious, folks.

Cate is still on strike. 🙂

Black Canary! by Grace (6) & Dad

Tonight’s sketch was suggested by a Twitter follower (thanks). And, it wasn’t too hard to convince Grace to draw a character who overpowers bad guys with sonic screams…

Green Arrow! by Grace (6) & Dad

… and speaking of archers, Grace chose to draw the guy across the street from Hawkeye … the irascible Oliver Queen, the Green Arrow. She’s a sucker for the goatee. (Psst … no one tell Jim McCann.)

Wonder Woman! by Katie Cook

This morning started by opening an e-mail to find a gorgeous drawing of Wonder Woman by the mega talented illustrator, Katie Cook! What a perfect way to start the day! Please do yourself a favor … click on the image to see it nice and large and take a look at how Katie built this image.

The girls and I met Katie at C2E2 this Sunday, and she could not have been nicer. I have to say, as a father, when someone takes time to not only talk to and be nice to your kids and then draws with them … well, that person is aces in your book. Great things are happening for Katie right now. And, I have a feeling it’s just the tip of the iceberg. Check out her work and her Web site: http://www.KatieCanDraw.com THANKS, KATIE!

The girls recently drew Wonder Woman, so we opted to do Wonder Girl. Cate and Grace had fun. I learned the painful lesson of 5 minutes. I loved my drawing until I was done and saw that poor Donna Troy seems to have been hit by the Ultra-Humanity’s brain bulging beam. Her forehead is HUGE! But, five minutes is five minutes. I had to leave it alone and post it. 🙂

Wonder Woman! by Grace (6) & Dad (Tim Miner)

Today,we flew to Chicago to see Grace and Cate’s great-grandmother and tomorrow … we’re swinging by the C2E2 comic convention downtown. The girls are looking forward to meeting lots of the artists and writers who have been part of 5MM … so we should have some fun photos up Monday.

In the meantime, here’s the venerable Diana Price by Gracie and me!

The Flash! by Grace (6) & Dad

We didn’t talk about it, but Grace’s Flash looks nice and good natured … like Barry Allen. Mine’s a bit more cocky … definitely rockin’ a bit more of the Wally West vibe …

Sir Justin – The Shining Knight! by Cate (4) and Dad (Tim)

Cate saw a Shining Knight action figure and wanted to draw him. But, when she heard his real name was “Sir Justin”– the same as her beloved uncle — well, let’s just say she attacked the drawing with verve and vigor.
