About 5-Minute Marvels

My love of comics and drawing came honestly — my dad loved them both. I grew up in a house full of books on cartooning and spent many Saturdays rifling through the 25 cent boxes at The Great Escape. When I wasn’t doing that, I was drawing.  But, I “grew up.” I got self-conscious. I stopped drawing. Luckily, I had kids — two little girls, Grace (8) & Cate (7). One day they asked if we could draw together.  And, a bedtime tradition was born.We pick one character and spend five to 15 minutes drawing — just enough to have fun, but not enough to be a perfectionist. And, along the way, we’ve made a lot of amazing friends.

The 5MM Crew …

Tim – I’m the one with the beard.

Grace (8) – She’s the heart and soul of 5MM. Her love of all things art is what started the whole ball rolling down the hill. And, her work to be a better artist pushes us forward.

Cate (7) – She’s mostly on strike, but she’s coming around. She keeps us all laughing. She rejects the notion that her hair was the inspiration for Medusa from the Inhumans.

Stop readin’ … start drawin’ …We hope you’ll join us in our tradition and send us your art. You may not be setting the kid in your life up for a lifelong love of comics … but, we’re willing to bet you’ll have fun. Click here to learn about submitting art. It’s easy.

  1. My son is only 2 but already he has a great interest in drawing, much like I did when I was his age. This is such a great idea for spending quality constructive time with your kids and I plan to start doing this with him once he gets a bit older.

    +1

  3. What a great idea… I should really try and start this with my kiddos. Regardless, love the site… love seeing the fun you guys are having in every drawing.

  4. This is an absolutely fantastic idea. I’ve also been doing some quick art – namely 3 Minute Portraits over at my site for much the same reason – to keep it quick, fun, and not let myself get over focussed.

    Keep up the great work!

  5. Love this site! We have always done this as well – drawing every night together…I find their art so inspiring that I take it a few steps further – they get so excited that they keep drawing – always from their own unique perspective – I love positive upward spirals like this! Great job!
