From Tales of Unusual Circumstance to The Ride Home to Cavemen in Space, it’s safe to say the members of the 5 Minute Marvels crew are fans of artist/writer, Joey Weiser. We love his work and, when it comes out, we’re there.
But, the household favorite is Mermin, Joey’s tale of a powerful, but playful fishman out of water. For the recent FLUKE Festival, Joey release a two-story ’zine, Mermin Theatre. The second story features a pup named Peanutbutter Marshmallow the girls wanted to draw. So, drawn it was.
You can pick up Mermin Theatre for a measley $3 on Joey’s Website, where all manner of other goodies can be found.
So, it’s been way, way too long since we last posted on this site. Life caught up with us a bit and we just stopped putting up our art. But, Grace and I have kept up the discipline of drawing, and we have lots to share. Here’s the first installment.
Here’s a photo of Grace at our new drafting table/drawing station …
And, now … on with the art:

Tonight, we took on another of Joey Weiser’s creations … MERMIN! I love Joey’s style. There’s a lot of craft that goes into developing a style as clean, simple and composed. And, it’s ideal when working with younger artist on how to compose full figures with shapes. Looking at Mermin, Grace built with shapes first tonight, in lieu of jumping in on a specific detail in the face.
I also included her first take, which she did not like. But, I think it’s really good and shows how she’s graduated to starting with a colored pencil and going back with a marker to “ink.”

One more for the night … in looking over all the artists coming out way for HeroesCon, Grace and I found Joey Weiser, an Atlanta-based artist and creator of Cavemen in Space and the strip, Monster Isle. Grace thought the monsters were terrific and drew this …
Check out Monster Isle at http://tragic-planet.com/monsterisle/ … it’s great stuff, especially for kids.
